The Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) is a series of tests designed for the intellectually disabled that can be used to measure a person’s cognitive processing ability after trauma or due to an exisiting condition. These tests are considered valid for persons above the age of six (6) and have shown in studies to be considered a valid representation of a person’s cognitive ability. Geriatric patients are an excellent group for these tests to be used (provided one uses the LOTCA-G, a seperate testing method) for evaluation purposes.

The LOTCA battery II is designed for rehabilitation purposes, and consists of four (4) sub-tests measuring thinking operations, visual motor ability, spatial and visual perception and spacial orientation. In a 2009 study published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy the LOTCA Battery was found to be a suitable, reliable test for measuring a persons cognitive ability, and would be very useful in determining what therapy would be appropriate for a patient. Source for this study is http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19708470.

The original Lowenstien Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment Battery is now superseded by the LOTCA Battery II, which improved upon the original by allowing a shorter examination time, more reliable testing methods and a diverse set of testing methods. Included in the LOTCA Battery II kit is card decks, colored blocks, pegboard set, manual and multiple choice questionnaire, among other materials. This kit is manufactured by Sammons-Preston, a leader in occupational therapy materials.

Perfect for the healthcare professional that wants to provide optimial care for their patients, the LOTCA Battery is a proven and tested method that is backed by multiple studies showing it’s effectiveness. Additionally the LOTCA-G is an excellent tool tailored for use with geriatric patients, and is available as a seperate package. With the aging baby-boomer population these tools would be an excellent investment for any practicing professional, and no healthcare professional should be without one.

The Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) Battery is a device initially designed by neurologists and psychologists to accurately measure the cognitive ability of individuals with various neurological disabilities or expressive language disabilities. However, since its inception, the LOTCA battery has been used to measure and evaluate a large number of additional populations, including the elderly, stroke patients, underachieving students, psychiatric patients, children, and spinal cord injury patients. The results obtained from the LOTCA cognitive battery allow for better decision making regarding treatment options, rehabilitation, and prognosis for the individuals undergoing testing.

Over the course of time, there have been numerous placebo controlled, reputable studies performed providing strong evidence to support the validity of the LOCTA battery. These experiments have results that are reproducible and highly accurate, and continue to reinforce the both usefulness and efficacy of this test system for its ability to provide beneficial information regarding the individuals studied.

The LOTCA battery tests four major functions of the brain. These areas include orientation, visual and spacial perception, visual motor organization, and thinking operations. Because the LOTCA cognitive battery only requires the use of simple verbal and motor responses, the test is very easy to administer. In addition, this test system can be completely administered in two or three, thirty-five to forty-five minute sessions, and the results are easy to interpret. Furthermore, there are currently modifications of the test system available specifically for the geriatric population, in place to provide more accurate and reliable assessments of that specific population.

The LOTCA cognitive battery is a useful tool and should be implemented in all patient populations in need of neuro psychological evaluation. Because it is easy to administer and the results are easily interpreted, the benefits the test system in terms of successful analysis make this product a unique one. In addition, this product offers clinicians and caregivers with a valuable window into the minds of individuals with challenging and debilitating disorders, for whom accurate or useful analysis may be lacking. With the information gained from the use of this product, caregivers are able to formulate treatment plans as well as gauge the success of current treatment implementation.

After all of the trauma and emergency care needed to treat a patient with a brain injury, the real work begins. Brain injuries can vary from brain trauma where the brain has been physically injured by force or brain tumors to cerebrovascular accidents more commonly known as strokes. Organic mental illness such as schizophrenia can also be considered a brain injury. As devastating as these injuries can be to the patient and their loved ones, progress and healing does occur and even the slightest gains should be acknowledged if not celebrated.

The Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment is a series of tests that evaluate abilities in four areas: orientation, visual and spatial perception, visual motor organization and thinking operations. These areas of assessment break down as follows: Orientation refers to time and place; visual perception is recognition of objects and shapes; spatial perception is to know where their body lies in space; thinking organization evaluates skills with emphasis on categorization and object classification; and visual motor organization refers to reconstructive skills. An Occupational Therapist uses these very specific testing protocols to follow progress in these important life skills.

The LOTCA can assess the beginning abilities of the patient and then monitor progress through re-evaluation using the same standardized tests and sub-tests. These sub-tests take approximately 45 minutes to complete and can be repeated throughout the patients recovery. Every patient is unique. A LOTCA may show a patient as having higher abilities in one area while having greater challenges in another. All of the data available to assess a patient’s ability is needed to map out their recovery plan and therapeutic strategies.

Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment test batteries are available online for the Best Prices at Amazon. There are LOTCA batteries for general brain injury assessment and also specific Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment batteries for geriatric patients. Each provides assessments for the essential four evaluations with the LOTCA-G having specialized ongoing evaluation tools with the needs of the elderly brain injury patient in mind. These items are packaged in easy to carry totes for home visits and room visits in a hospital or rehabilitation center setting.

Great testing tools are the foundation of an Occupational Therapist’s practice. When progress is supported with data, a therapist can customize their patient’s treatment plan to give them back some independence and vitality.

The job of an occupational therapist is to help individuals who may have lost cognitive abilities that are necessary in leading a normal and active lifestyle. Cognitive functions include organizing a daily routine or performing functions that were once common such as bathing. An occupational therapist must perform test to get a better understanding of the needs of the patient so they can assist them in rehabilitation.

Individuals who have suffered from severe brain injuries require a more intense treatment plan. The use of Loewenstein occupational therapy cognitive assessment measures the patient’s abilities as well as helps determine the appropriate rehabilitation methods. The complete Lotca battery test can be performed within 40 minutes from start to finish depending on the patient. It can even be broken down into two sessions if the occupational therapist feels a break is required.

The Loewenstein occupational therapy cognitive assessment was designed for Occupational therapist who work directly with brain injured patients. It has a series of 20 tests that are broken down into four major groups that include Orientation, Perception, Visual Orientation and Visiomotor Organization. Each of these groups have sub test but they all work toward finding the best method of treatment for the patient. It does not have a one size fits all approach but assess the individual process each patient will need to take on their road to recovery. This simple yet effective tool is a necessity for Occupational therapists who are looking for an effective way to measure a patient’s skills after brain damage has occurred. It can also be used on individuals who suffered a stroke, or patients with schizophrenia.

A patient’s overall performance and progress can be rated using Lotca and recorded within their files. It can be used in the beginning of treatment to get an idea of what needs to be worked on. In the middle of treatment to see how far the patient has come and how much further they have to go at the end of treatment to see their overall progress. Lotca testing can generally be bought online. Occupational therapists who are qualified to administer such test are recommended to buy the Loewenstein occupational therapy cognitive assessment. Understanding their patients needs will help determine which test model is right for them. Its comprehensive test structure gives therapist the most accurate results so the appropriate rehabilitation strategy can be developed.
